Hello Hashers
A bit breezy to say the least - the gale force winds in Damascus were
amplified ten-fold by the time we got to the mountains near Saidnaya. The wind
had blown most of the paint away over night (next time we shoudl use lead-based
paint....) and even the hares had trouble finding the trail at times. We also
had a film crew in tow, who are making a documentary series about expatriates in
Syria. Unfortunately (for them) they got lost on the way and had to leave
before the down downs. They got footage of the opening circle, the walk and a
bit of the run though. Arthur picked a site with fantasic scenery too, so after
the programme has screened the place will probably be packed with picnickers
(and trash...). A poor turnout of runners (only 3.5 (if you include Paul who
quit half way) plus the two hares) but a big group of walkers.
A good runners hash - there were some hills (or "bumps" as Arthir calls
them) but mostly smooth ground, even off road, and plenty of paths to follow.
Also there was a long run-in along the road at the end, mainly because the hares
were almost out of paint by then so had to hit the road rather than take the
scenic route back. Since the run was around 8km that was probably all for the
best, though Paul obviously didnt think so as he sneaked back to the cars early
and moved the circle an extra 300m away, to give us a little extra
exercise.
A welcome return to the "great anniversaries" from RA Arthur, though none
about ransom payments this week. There was a near diplomatic incident with
Miguel over whether the Englishman Francis Drake or the Spaniard Magellan had
been the first to sail around the world. War was averted by interventions of
the French....(who claimed Napoleon got there first anyway). Hares Arthur and
me got an additional down down from Paul for having the first hold check in
sight of the cars (if you had looked the other way you wouldn't have seen them)
and we had virgins Eugene, Anare and Celia, and returners Khalid and June. The
usual list of crimes and criminals: Rafi for getting all dressed up in his
running gear then going to sleep in the car instead, and Paul for only doing
half the run; Maria for schizophrenia - running on the walking trail; Frederick
for visual impairment - running on past a clear false trail "X" - it was
probably the only paint that was clear up on the ridge, too; Rich for
wearing his sexy 1970s-style running shorts...then going on the walk; Khalid for
emulating Tony Blair and seeking the "third way" - when the trail clearly split
left and right he decided to go straight ahead, and continued even when the
hares put him right; and Joan for having the cheek/good sense to go home this
weekend and leave Arthur alone - some hashers would have preferred it the other
way round but that's another story..
No one volunteered to set the trail next week so please contact Paul or
Arthur if you can do it.
